Contradictions.
The late morning sunshine pours into her bedroom, gently lulling her awake. She hugs her pillow and smiles in gratification. Cooks a batch of fresh pancakes and sips yet another frothy breakfast tea. Pulling out her finest tropical aura garments and dabbing on her favourite red satsuma lipstick she enters into the afternoon heat. The gentle rays catch her and pinpoint the concealed freckles on her face.
She wanders along the deco drive as if caught in a time passed by. The tint of her sunglassed paints the picture and sets the scene of desires manifested in a long lost dream. Bodies sheen in an oil glazed glow and watch as carnival dancers arrest in movement upon tacky table tops. Open top cars glossed baby blue blur music to gain a glare of glory. To catch attention, to make passers by stare at the prized location of fabulousness existing without a care.
She sees a man with a grey curling beard, deep in his eyes is happiness diluted with sorrow. He sits leg bent in a shaded shop doorway, shying away from the blured chaos. A wireless radio is his only company as it crackles in response. The sunglass adorned faces refuse to remove their lense of denial and ignorance to something so real. His gaze meets hers and his sadness dialates, he opens the plastic bag and joy attenuates his jaded vision. She walks on and looks back over her shoulder as he rustles with the wrapper and whistles to his own tune.
The American Dream.
I like the way people on their bikes smile, ring their bells and say hello.
Trash chutes, water bowls in banks for dogs.
"I'm really, really fantastic thanks M'am'.
Subway gives your change through a shoot and ice cream tubs turn into vats.
People call nail polish 'hot' and a small queue in at the pharmacy is "retarded".
Wheelchairs have priority on public transport and OAP's wear gold lame bikini's and roller blades.
I like the way life is sunny and glossy, as though the state has been varnished with honey
coating its landscape and inhabitants.
I'm not sure that I could permanently relocate to the 'Sunshine State', but I'm joyful to watch, to learn and appreciate this bright 'sunny side up' way of life.
The Grass is always Greener
My friend Stephanie asked me "If I could be anyone else who would it be?". It could be due to any number of reasons, because you admire their style, opinions, music or outlook on life. There have been many people I have looked to for inspiration throughout my life, my sister, friends, family and of course celebrities.
In recent years my icon has been television presenter/model/writer/d.j/fashionista all rolled into one- Alexa Chung. The main objective of Steph's University project was to explore the idea of how admiration for others is a chain effect and will come full circle.
As human beings existing in a society which places individuals up on pedestal, it is only natural that we look to others in admiration. Some may call it insecurity, but the reality is that we all search for inspiration from others be it due to their physicality, abilities or talents.
Called
Crickets sound the night time alarm
left to ring in alternate breaths.
They cluster together then quickly disperse
to leave one wondering from where they were unearthed.
The ear is lended to this ejected volume
which draws closer and then fades
when the night time hum is snatched away.

Flashing lights
Bolting replay fires back
reflections on a dimly lit mirror
unravel the suspended cords of time.
Flicker book of memories repeat across her eyes
bookmarked pages of recollection.
I stand barefaced, exposed and vulnerable
to the passage of flashbacks
to the passage of flashbacks
which reignite unprompted on a nameless night.
Bienvenido a Miami
2012 commences with a three month stint in the 'Sunshine State', I feel truly blessed to start the year in this way :)
Resolutions
Prosperity. Renewal. Health. Appreciation. Empathy. Consciousness of other cultures.
The possibility to change, to make a difference.
New Year in The Capital
Sketch
A best friends birthday should always be special, so I wanted to make sure that a belated celebration for Amy's 24th would be one to cherish. She had mentioned a restaurant called 'Sketch' and I was led to their web page. I was so impressed with Sketch's sophisticated execution of merging their three vital components into one 'lieu'. Sketch welds together art and and music with food at its centre, the result is a solidification of delightful myriads to experience.
We had dinner at 'The gallery by night' and were continuously distracted and enthused by quirky design touches which make 'Sketch' a truly unique venue. From the bread basket made out of Lego, Russian doll sugar pot, egg capsule toilets, to being shrouded in a cape if you decide to take a cigarette break. Sketch allows you to feel as though you are tapping into the world of design and innovation whilst enjoying conventional elements of a night out. This allows you to not only be an spectator but a participant in 'Sketch's' inimitable set up. Amy was given a surprise birthday plate lavished with pastel coloured macaroons and sweet treats and myself and the waitress sang a chorus of Happy Birthday!
After washing down our food with white green tea, we headed to 'The Glade' bar where you could mistake the pod-like architecture for being almost like a human roulette table. The clientele we met inside proved to encapsulate the ethos of the game. True players boasting about their millions and business trips to New York, after suppressing a few yawns and launching into a feminist rant Amy and I skipped over to 'The Parlour' and loved every minute of the d.j set in full swing. I still think of this night every time I hear Adele's 'Rolling in the deep' Jamie XX remix. Joyful times which lead me to toast two celebrations, my best friends birthday and Sketch's championing of a perfect party venue :)
