Haunts to highlight

Casa Paco/ Calle Guardia, 14, Barcelona

This bar simultaneously serves as a kind of cultural center, attracting a diverse crowd of thinkers and drinkers on any given night. Casa Paco’s terrace is an obligatory stop for the alternative folk passing through Born. Surrounded by trees and a children’s playground, the pedestrian street location is the ideal place to try the bar’s famous caipirinhas, made on the spot by laid-back bartenders. Fridays and Saturdays the party goes on until three in the morning, fueled by an eclectic mix of music from local and touring DJs.

Bar Tequila/  Calle Escudelles, 28.  08002,  Barcelona.

This jukebox rock haunt on the historic street of Escudellers stands out amongst the many bars on the famed nightlife strip. The interior is scarcely lit in a cool neon red that floods the two long corridors and walls decorated with heavy metal vintage posters and long track lists of music playing on the hanging headphones.  As the beers, “cubatas” and “calimochos” start to flow, petitions and requests keep the DJ busy. Throw on the headphones and rock to your own pace if you can handle the rush.

Madame Jasmine/ Rambla de Raval, 22.  08001, Barcelona.

This Ramblas del Raval favourite lingers largely unnoticed between the scores of local kebab shops. Madame Jasmine is bizarre but cozy place, filled to bursting every night by young clientele. It specializes in cocktails and carefully prepared bocadillos (sandwiches) that are put together before one’s very eyes in a partially open kitchen. A lively spot: perfect for a drink or mid-evening snack.

Pile 43/  Calle Agla, 4.  08002., Barcelona.

This cosy bar tucked away in the heart of Barrio Gotico has plenty of character for a small place. The cocktails are a highlight, with extraordinary Mojitos that keep you coming back for more. The venue is more of a lounge than a club, with a varied retro music policy and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it a favourite amongst the locals.

Polaroid Bar/  Carrer dels Codols, 29.  08002, Barcelona.

Polaroid bar is a small bar shamelessly dedicated to the 1980s era. It goes all out with 80s themed film posters, toys and comics, with 80s power ballads soundtracking the evening of course. Classic TV shows and movies such as Flashdance, Topgun and ET are projected on the wall, bringing nostalgic joy to the bar hidden in the Barri Gotico neighbourhood near the seaside. The bar is kitted out in kitsch decor with VHS tapes stuck to the walls and retro memorabilia, creating the ultimate 80s tribute. Drinks are cheap, with free popcorn being served with selected one-euro beverages.

Nevermind/  Calle Escudelles, Blanca 3.  08002, Barcelona.

To call Nevermind’s atmosphere friendly is an understatement: Any scene comprised of surfers, skaters, snowboarders and other stereotypically-chill outdoor enthusiasts guarantees welcoming company and fast (at least for the night) friends. With graffiti-style murals propping up the walls, all-spectrum ambient lighting and happy and relaxed bar flies everywhere you look, Nevermind is the place to begin and end your evening.

Oviso Bar/  Carrer d'Arai, 5.  08002, Barcelona.

Situated in the Gothic quarter on the trippy, teeming Plaça de George Orwell, Bar Oviso stands out as an unassuming, ambient dive from which to seek respite from the whir of Barcelona’s engine of tourism.  With a colorful, sea faring-themed indoor mural, turn-of-the-century circus-style interior décor and an outdoor terrace on one of the city’s peppiest little squares, Bar Oviso attracts a pleasantly laid-back brand of bohemian.
Along with a café con leche, the crêpes prove mouth-watering, while ample Mediterranean dishes, fruit shakes and various vegetarian options—a rarity in pork-centric Spain—grace the menu. Cocktails and wines round out the cuisine. During luscious summertime, Oviso is a veritable Barcelonian oasis, offering tasty, handily priced meals-of-the-day that include a starter and main for only 6 euros.
